What is CBD?: A guide to Cannabidiol 2560 1572 THE ILUMI LIFE™

CBD is all the rage these days – it’s a buzzword heard in almost every conversation. But the funny thing about it is that there’s no actual ‘buzz’ involved! That’s right, it doesn’t give you a buzz or create a high-like sensation. Instead of a euphoric feeling, it may provide much more practical benefits like anxiety relief, pain relief, improvements in sleep quality, decrease in acne, increased mental sharpness, and even anti-seizure, to name a few. Before we jump into the greatness of CBD though, let’s get a little technical so you understand the scientific components.

Technically, what is CBD?

CBD is an acronym that stands for cannabidiol (pronounced like “canna-bid-aisle”), which is a non-intoxicating, naturally occurring compound found in hemp plants. Hemp plants are a cousin to the marijuana plants, all of which are in the cannabis family. And every plant in the cannabis family produces cannabinoids. The relationship between CBD and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is that they are both cannabinoids, and they are also the most well known cannabinoids that exist. While THC is the main psychoactive component in cannabis plants, like marijuana (which is super high in THC), CBD has no psychoactive components. This means that CBD doesn’t have much effect on cognitive brain activity and therefore doesn’t create the feeling of being high (euphoric, giggly, excitable, etc).

How do you take CBD?

CBD can enter the body in a few different ways – you can ingest it through your mouth, stomach, lungs, skin, or other permeable membranes in the body. Let’s dig into more details on each way to ingest CBD.

Edibles

CBD edibles are any form of CBD that can be ingested through the stomach. These are things like pills, beverages, baked goods, mints, or CBD oil added to any food.

Sublingual Tinctures

Ingesting CBD through the tissue under your tongue is a great way to take CBD because these membranes are very permeable, meaning they absorb things faster than say, your skin. The CBD will get into your system faster and therefore the benefits of it may be experienced sooner. Depending on what kind of CBD tinctures you have, take the recommended amount and simply drop it under your tongue.

Pills

If you don’t like the taste of the oil from the CBD sublingual tinctures, pills are a great alternative. To ingest CBD through a pill, you simply take the pill and it is then absorbed by your stomach.

Vapes

If you’re already used to vaping with nicotene or marijuana (where it’s legal), then vaping CBD may be the option for you. Simply inhale the vaporized CBD oil through a vaping device or pen, and there you have another way of ingesting CBD.

Smoking

While it’s not the most common way of ingesting CBD, smoking it is certainly a viable way to do so. Remember, CBD comes from a plant just like marijuana or tobacco do so what you smoke is the actual flower of the plant, after it has been treated. You can smoke the CBD flower in very similar ways that you can smoke other plants – rolling it, using a bowl, or even a bong.

Topicals

Topicals are CBD-based solutions that are ingested through the skin. These can be things like salves, lotions, lip balms, serums, patches, or even lubricants. The CBD is absorbed through your skin and the benefits of it will be central to the area in which the topical is used. For example, if you have an achy wrist you can rub some salve on the affected area and the benefits you may see, like pain relief or anti-inflammatory, would be in the area of the wrist.

Suppositories

CBD suppositories are solid forms of CBD solution that are ingested through internal bodily membranes, like the rectum or vagina. Since the tissues in those areas, especially the rectum, are so permeable, the CBD solution melts and is absorbed almost immediately into the bloodstream. If you’re looking for a quick way to experience the benefits of CBD, then suppositories may be the right option for you.

How does CBD work and what are the benefits?

Despite not having an abundance of research conducted (due to the fact that it was illegal to do so up until 2015), there are some known benefits of using CBD. These benefits certainly are owed more testing and investigation, however CBD may help with the following:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Inflammation or swelling
  • Acne
  • Nausea
  • Arthritis or joint pain
  • Insomnia
  • Nerve pain
  • Alzheimer’s, dementia, MS (multiple sclerosis), Parkinson’s and other neurological diseases

The way CBD works is through a system of special receptors that we already have in our bodies. In our brains, we have receptors called CB1 and CB2 that are responsible for taking in the cannabinoid molecules and disseminating them through your system. Without those receptors, we wouldn’t experience the benefits of CBD or the psychoactive effects of THC (remember THC and CBD are just 2 kinds of cannabinoids that are assimilated by these receptors in our brains).

Is CBD legal?

In short, yes, CBD is federally legal. As long as it contains no more than 0.3% THC, CBD is fully legal. This specification came as a result of the 2018 United States Farm Bill, which made CBD federally legal. Some states may have limitations on consumption or purchasing, like in Virginia where CBD is legal but only for those that have a prescription. The Farm Bill also states that cultivators of CBD must be licensed and that possession across state lines is legal, meaning you can travel with it.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a naturally occurring substance that may cause benefits including relief from pain, inflammation, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and even nerve disorders and neurological diseases. Because it is now legal to buy and sell CBD in the United States, be sure that you are doing your homework and staying educated on what CBD is, how it can help you, and what brands of CBD products are the safest and cleanest. Ilumi is a leading CBD solution that can make your mind and body radiant through the power of healing cannabidiol.
